These three trees turned up in a large area of vacant land near one of Perth's primary arterial roads.

One or more have been turning up there for some years, appearing a day or two before Christmas, and vanishing again around Jan 5. I have no idea who puts them there, or why, but they have become as much a feature of our summer Christmas as the now defunct beer-can tree from down the road.

Very sweet!

About the Weekly Photo Project 2016

Welcome to the 2016 Weekly Photo Project - it's open for all levels of photographers and you can join at any time!

The idea of the project is to have fun, whilst learning more about photography and your camera.

The idea is simple: each week you will try to take a new photograph based on a theme, executed any way you feel fit. The list of themes for the year and the copy / paste tags for each theme can be found in the Community

Try to take the photos weekly if possible (it is more fun that way - we don’t check exif data but “stockpiling” images in advance or raiding your archive would not be in the spirit of the project). The Project should not be a source of stress though: if you’re late then you’re late, if you miss a theme then you miss a theme, so what a…

Ten Eleven Handy hints for participating in a Weekly Photo Project

Ten Eleven Handy hints for participating in a Weekly Photo Project

As we get ready for the 2016 Weekly Photo Project, I thought I'd share some of the things I've learnt over past few years.

First - Don't be shy - we really don't care what level of experience or quality of gear you have. We have absolute beginners and full-time professionals taking part, with everything from high-end DLSRs to 2MP smartphones. The point is to take part - to paraphrase one of my author friends "If you want to be a photographer, take photos!", and this is as true for those just wanting to improve their skills as for those looking to turn (or are already) pro.

Second - Make sure you create a new album for the project at the start of the year, and (this is the important bit) add each photo to it before you share it. And include the theme in the caption of the photo before you share it - it makes it a lot easier when you are reviewing your work.

Third - Please re-share your posts! After…

Ceiling decorations at a public open area in a new arcade in Perth. Surrounding the skylight are skyscrapers reaching UP , while the COLOUR/COLOR glass baffles provide LEADING LINES and REFLECTIONS, the lights give SYMMETRY, there is WATER on the glass roof from a passing rainstorm (you can just make out the CLOUDS AND SKY), and the REPETITIVE patterns complete the image.

So that's eight REPEATED themes in one :) (Can you find any more?)

This has to stop.

This has to stop.

And who has to stop it?

Us. Blokes.

Because it is up to us to change our attitudes, and to damn well growup.

The only time it is the victim's fault is ... never. Which means that the only people to blame for violence against women are the perpetrators - and the rest of us who say (even unconsciously)  that it is in any way even partly the victims' fault.

So I say again, the only people who can stop this is us.

The ANZACs and our fallen service men and women are, in many ways, one of the hallmarks of Australia, representing our painful coming-of-age.

The Mandurah War Memorial is one reminder of their sacrifice, and one of the most poignant.

We saw The Last Witch Hunter this evening.

We saw The Last Witch Hunter this evening.

We went in with extremely low expectations.

And were disappointed.

It is actually quite a good movie! Vin Diesel has great fun playing what can on!y be described as a Fighter Player Character alongside the Mentor (even if he's 800 years younger) of Michael Caine. Elijah Wood makes for an interesting Sidekick. Meantime Rose Leslie plays Chloe the ElfMagicUserPsy Witch PC with class and style. And taking no nonsense from the Fighter.

The story is pretty good, with decent plotting, and a couple of well hinted and revealed twists. And all of our heroes get to sprout some awesome one-liners.

All in all a much better movie than we were expecting. External detached spine on The Witch Queen notwithstanding. But the ghost of Mr. Geiger is not amused, I'm sure.

Ahead of last night's rain, Alicia Smith and I spent a dramatic afternoon down at Mandurah, despite things like partial track closures!

The sky put on a great display for us, and it gave me a chance to try out my new 12-24mm zoom - a birthday present thanks in large part to Maureen Gell, Stephen Gunnell, Ruth Kerr, and Philip Kerr.

It has a 100 degree FoV at the widest, without the characteristic distortion of a fisheye (10mm for my camera), and gives me a chance at these wide and dramatic skies that I struggled with before. I look forward to trying it out with my timelapse gear and a clear night sky!
