Smith #WPP2015 #WPP2015-Wk-48-MyCountry The ANZACs and our fallen service men and women are, in many ways, one of the hallmarks of Australia, representing our painful coming-of-age. The Mandurah War Memorial is one reminder of their sacrifice, and one of the most poignant. http://www.mandurah.wa.gov.au/WarMemorial.htm

Nankeen (or Rufous) Night Heron.

Image
Nankeen (or Rufous) Night Heron. Normally one of the shyest and trickiest of birds to photograph, this one (part of a group of four) was standing out in the open, in broad daylight, intent on stalking a group of fishermen. This rather dominate male stands out, with his fine breeding plumes clearly visible.

The latest from Humans of Perth is someone with a very clear way of looking at the world. Originally shared by Humans of Perth "I know there is a lot of stigma attached to feminism, but, to me, it stands for equality for everyone. Like gay rights, battling racism, disability rights and gender equality. Men are told that if they cry they are a woman, which is like saying feminine traits are bad. Crying is a human trait. It's just been gendered over the years for some strange reason. Feminism about breaking the mould and being inclusive of everyone."

Two thirds of the new cast for MST3K has been announced.

Image
Two thirds of the new cast for MST3K has been announced. There is 18 days to go on the Kickstarter, and we're half way to a half-season. We might still get to a full season - which would be awesome - not just because 12 episodes, but because it gives Joel and the cast a decent shot at pitching to a network for an on-going series. Originally shared by Felicia Day Well, in the "Dream Come True" category, today it was announced I will be playing Dr Forrester's daughter in the MST3K reboot that's on Kickstarter NOW! Please click below to donate so we can make 12 episodes happen! bit.ly/mst3k-update8 I watched MST3K with my brother religiously as a kid. The reason Joel thought of me for this was because I was in Salt Lake City at the con and I went up to get a picture with him because I wanted to rub it in my brother Ryon's face. So thanks Ryon! You got me my dream job! Please help me all the episodes happen so I can rub it in his face a LOT! :)

One of out local camera store chains held an expo yesterday, and one of the things running was an instructional session on studio shooting. In this case, it was all single-light, although there was a two-light setup running as well.  All of these are SOOC, so I guess I did learn a few things.

We saw The Last Witch Hunter this evening.

We saw The Last Witch Hunter this evening. We went in with extremely low expectations. And were disappointed. It is actually quite a good movie! Vin Diesel has great fun playing what can on!y be described as a Fighter Player Character alongside the Mentor (even if he's 800 years younger) of Michael Caine. Elijah Wood makes for an interesting Sidekick. Meantime Rose Leslie plays Chloe the Elf Magic User Psy Witch PC with class and style. And taking no nonsense from the Fighter. The story is pretty good, with decent plotting, and a couple of well hinted and revealed twists. And all of our heroes get to sprout some awesome one-liners. All in all a much better movie than we were expecting. External detached spine on The Witch Queen notwithstanding. But the ghost of Mr. Geiger is not amused, I'm sure. 8/10 and a really good cappuccino in a dive bar on the Sid and Nancy scale.

Abandoned bunker, Rottnest.

Image
Abandoned bunker, Rottnest. Part of the fortifications for the 6.2inch Bickley Battery, this bunker was one of the outlying defenses. I suspect it may have been a machine gun post, given the lack of mountings on top, and the absence of firing slits. At the back you can see of the grenade traps.

It does not make up for over a year of criminal harassment, but it is wonderful to see that, not only has she got a book-and-movie deal out of it, but that multiple A-listers want in, and multiple studios wanted to make it. Originally shared by John Samuel Oh this is just glorious. The vile pit of misogyny and harassment (aka GamerGate) has spent over a year trying to crush Zoe Quinn. I'm not much of a jet man, preferring prop jobs, and stringbags most of all. The De Havilland Vampire has a special place despite this, and always gives me a thrill - and a bit of chill. Mostly due to a single novella, one that I consider the author's finest work. And as November rolls towards December and Christman, it is time to pull The Shepherd from the bookshelf again. Maybe one day an airshow will do a combined Vampire / Mosquito flyby... Originally shared by Dylan van Graan "Follow the lead........" I'm out and about again, looking forward to a packed day tomorrow. Tonight two classics in formation :) Vampire and Airmacchi MB-326, better known here as the Impala.

Fortunately, it is listed as a Significant Tree, and is protected. It is also a very popular spot for weddings and wedding photos.

Ahead of last night's rain, Alicia Smith and I spent a dramatic afternoon down at Mandurah, despite things like partial track closures! The sky put on a great display for us, and it gave me a chance to try out my new 12-24mm zoom - a birthday present thanks in large part to Maureen Gell, Stephen Gunnell, Ruth Kerr, and Philip Kerr. It has a 100 degree FoV at the widest, without the characteristic distortion of a fisheye (10mm for my camera), and gives me a chance at these wide and dramatic skies that I struggled with before. I look forward to trying it out with my timelapse gear and a clear night sky!
