The real history of cosplay and fan costumes - and it is all because of one amazing woman.

The real history of cosplay and fan costumes - and it is all because of one amazing woman. Originally shared by Self-Rescuing Princess Society "For more than 10 years Morojo and Ackerman were an inseparable, intellectually compatible dream duo, and 1939 was an especially big year for the pair: they started their first major zine together, jointly financed the publication of teenage Ray Bradbury’s first sci-fi zine, and attended the first-ever World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) wearing 'futuristicostumes' straight out of the 1936 H.G. Wells movie Things to Come — the FIRST FAN COSTUMES EVER WORN IN RECORDED HISTORY. "Handsome Forrie cut a dashing figure in his giant shoulder pads and breeches, tiny Morojo’s ball gown converted into a ROMPER with a CAPE, and every other attendee who wasn’t busy hatin’ on ‘em for out-fanning the rest of the world started planning their own costumes for next year." As a former member of the troop that spearheaded equal membership in Australia, I wish her and her troop the very best. I remain astounded by the mirror-image nature of Scouting and Guiding between Australia and America. Here, the Scouts are progressive and inclusive. There, it is the Guides. Here, the Guides are conservative, and there they are the progressive and inclusive movement. Via Self-Rescuing Princess Society. I knew of the link between weaving and coding, but I had not realised that knitting was Turing-complete! And, for the record, anyone who thinks that coding is male-only process is just a bigot. I know, and work with, dozens of excellent coders of all genders. Originally shared by Ray Radlein Edit: As someone added on Twitter: "Your periodic reminder that knitting is a two-register counter machine, and is therefore Turing-complete." https://twitter.com/1opter/status/810258612316729344/photo/1

No photos this time, just a very neat utility for Android users.

No photos this time, just a very neat utility for Android users. Raw2DNG is one of those rare things that does exactly what it says on the cover. It converts pretty much any RAW format into a standard DNG. And if you are a Snapseed user, this means that all the formats that it does not support (Samsung, for example) now become available. I now have a completely mobile raw-based post-processing workflow available to me. Oh, and it is free, with no ads. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fimagena.raw2dng&hl=en

If you don't know the Liaden series, use the link to help you find 'Agent of Change' or 'Conflict of Honors' - either are a great place to start with this wonderful sprawling series. http://www.baen.com/the-gathering-edge-earc.html

For this last week I've been seeing a mural on the side of the Carlisle Cellarbrations bottle-shop go up. As Friday was my last day at our old office, I stopped along the way to grab some shots of it, and to have a chat with the proprietor. The artist is a local fellow, Drew Straker, who is on Instagram as @muralist . When I got closer, I was surprised to see that there was more to it than the main side of the building!
