Still need to pay shipping, but still... Originally shared by Ben Gerber Ticket to Ride fan? Right now the TTR Orient Express expansion - a physical expansion made with real cards, is free. I guess that counts as a hot deal? You do have to pay shipping, which in the states amounts to about $5.  My wife LOVES TTR and I enjoy it as well, so I got her this as a quick little gift she'll find in the mail.  https://www.daysofwonder.com/en/buy/?family=TE&groupp=Orient

We were just down at Scarborough Beach, and we see this helicopter doing slow passes back and forth. It departs, and this largish boat comes up out of the night, searchlights blazing, and stops about 200m offshore. We've only got our birdwatching binoculars with us, but we eventually see them hook up a dinghy without an outboard, and then they spend quite a bit more time scanning the sea in the area. They head out about 2km for a bit, come back, search a little more, and then head back up towards Hillary's or Whitfords. Nothing on the sea rescue or police twitters, or in any of the news feeds as yet. Wonder what happened?

Boosting the signal on this story.

Boosting the signal on this story. If true (and watch this space to get ti read the full transcript) then both the ABC management and the Coalition have some pretty serious allegations to answer for. Originally shared by Scott Hamilton (Dame Nilly Lunchalot) If you've got some time, read this long piece on the tribulations of tech journalist Nick Ross who recently left the ABC saying he was gagged from reporting on the Coalitions NBN plan. New Matilda says they have audio recordings from Ross of meetings he had. These aren't a "smoking gun", but they do show how much pressure the ABC is under from the Coalition, and how they are trying to stay alive and as independent as they can. This requires some pragmatic compromises. And just think, this is for tech coverage, imagine how the main news desk feels. https://newmatilda.com/2016/01/21/false-balance-abc-news-boss-directed-journalist-nick-ross-to-target-alps-nbn-plan-for-insurance-against-coalition-attacks/

Well I've just devoured the latest book by Dave Freer - Changeling's Island, and it is a doozy.

Well I've just devoured the latest book by Dave Freer - Changeling's Island, and it is a doozy. First, it is set very close to home for me - a mere hop step and jump to the other end of the continent, and then across one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world. But for all of that distance, Dave's portrayal of Finder's Island is very familiar. While we do not have any permanently settled islands like it over here in the West, there are many places here that have the same feel. "Down by the old Muir place" will be perfectly understood in certain SW towns, never mind that the Muir family has not owned it for over 80 years... And being a local has to be earned - some people have been there generations, and are still "newcomers", while others become locals within months. Second, The story is wonderful - the characters are engaging, the history is treated with sympathy and supported by good research. Our hero is not perfect, and Dave has pic
