The gulls are nesting on Penguin Island, and the chicks are hatched. The small group of Little Eagles in the area are now making the most of this abundant food supply. The gulls, in turn, are protesting this most strenuously.

This is one of Perth beach icons - the City Beach Surf Lifesaving Club watchtower. This is the second such tower, the first was destroyed in 1978 by cyclone Alby. It is, however, getting on, and many of the current generation of lifesavers do not trust the structure any more, and so a smaller portable tower is set up on the beach.

Sian Ridden issued the challenge, so here is day 1.

This young lady was searching for a pump for her kiteboard kite, as she'd forgotten hers.

A good excuse to practice asking complete strangers if you can take a portrait of them - something I find very hard to do.

Many devastating quotes in this editorial, but this is possibly the most telling: "There is no victory in destroying what you set out to win."

And he did. For many years OL Abbott traduced the office of Prime Minister and then complained about being bitten by his own handiwork.

A coup is a group seizing power outside of the law.

Voting in a new party leader is not a coup, and John Samuel reminds us below. And it is not exactly rare in Australian politics, either.

Photo taken outside my office, which borders the factory of a formerly iconic Western Australian solar hot water system manufacturer.

And now for the politics.

Successive waves of Australian Federal Governments - of both major parties - have taken to demonizing refugees not sourced from UNHCR camps. As the policies have gotten more extreme, offshore (think Gitmo-like) 'processing camps' have been set up to house those that do make it through the gauntlet of naval vessels that tow them back to Indonesian waters.

In the camps they are subject to institutional abuse, physical and sexual,…
