Damn but these things are huge! Pretty quiet for their size, though.

Contrail over Perth - Doha to Melbourne.

Contrails over Perth are something of a rarity, in part due to atmospherics over SW WA not being the best for them, but mainly because most flights land here before going on somewhere else.

Over the past year I've been doing something secret: designing the ultimate camera bag (and everything bag!) with Peak Design, and now you can find out all about it in the fancy video below...  we had so much fun filming some of the more ridiculous bits!

In the video you'll hear how we bled, sweat, and teared up over camera bags for months on end. It's amazing how much stuff I learned, how much stuff I didn't know, and what came out of this entirely creative process for me. Basically, we tore everything we knew about bags apart and redesigned the whole thing from the ground up. You'll love it. You'll LOLCats Lurve It!!! :)

Making the most of things.

This is a complete failure. It is taken with a mobile phone, using digital zoom, low resolution, and a clip-on tele-converter. It is completely out of focus, and technically has nothing to recommend it.

And yet. Take a look at the second image.

A bit of cropping, a bit of colour manipulation, and all of a sudden we have something any French Impressionist would be proud of.

Photography, like Impressionism, is all about the light, after all.

As a long time reader of comp.risks, and having a professional interest in security (as a sysadmin), I'll take this opportunity to say that anyone who is promoting online voting as a replacement for paper ballots is (in my opinion) one or more of a)Hopelessly naive, b)Frighteningly optimistic, c)Woefully ignorant of the problems of authentication combined with anonymity, d)Ignoring the problems of coercion, or (worst of all) e) Willing to accept vote tampering.

I do not seriously think that the Electoral Commissioner would be willing to accept vote tampering, but every electronic or online system has been demonstrated to be vulnerable to it. Worse, such attacks can occur at any point, be it in corrupt coding, interference with the ballots, or by injecting forged ballots.

All of these have be proven to be possible in every practical and theoretical system proposed to date.

This is ignoring the problem of d) - if the voting is not occurring in a public place, how do you prove that the…

An excellent piece by George Takei that shows just how wrong a judge can get it.

George Takei responds to Justice Thomas's Obergefell dissent.

In part of his personal dissent to last week's Supreme Court ruling that struck down laws against gay couples marrying, Clarence Thomas argued that the government could not bestow nor take away dignity. As one of his examples he invoked the war time internment of Japanese Americans.

One of those Japanese Americans interned was a child who would grow up to be the actor and civil rights activist George Takei. Here he rebuts Clarence Thomas.
