Some very wise words here from ABC Australia writer Deirdre Fidge :
"It is unclear at this point exactly how Megan Marx and Tiffany Scanlon identify and, ultimately, it's none of our business. It's beautiful seeing two people so happy together, regardless of circumstance."

The whole series of articles on sexuality and relationships that they have been running this year have been extraordinarily insightful and well-written as a bonus. The sad thing is how all of them refer to the problems that we (as a society) have with them. And by 'them', I mean relationships as a whole.

Humans as a whole have an urge to put things into neat, clean, orderly buckets. "Us" and "Them", "White" and "Black", to give some binary examples. But as just about any scientist (who you would think would be the worst offenders in this) will tell you, the real world is a lot messier.

Some years ago, I saw a photograph of a group of about 40 children f…

OK, it's time to release the hounds. This is a project that I am writing and I'm asking for your support. Do you like "Utopia"? "Drop The Dead Donkey?", "The IT Crowd"? Well, here's the opportunity to live out those tales inspired by the 1970s cartoon "Papers & Paychecks" in the 1st edition of the Dungeons Masters Guide for D&D.

Please back this project for a funny and insightful RPG.

It was Ace Race day today, this time at the new Chichester Park course. 44 holes of fun!

At the final counting, we had a tie at 3A/3M, and went to a sudden death play-off between myself and Michael Wombell. I was lucky enough to sink an ace on the second throw, and won my first Ace Race!

Thanks to Big Al for an awesome afternoon, and to Mike for being a great player to the very end.

Ubuntu Turns 12, Happy Birthday!

Oh man! Now Ubuntu's about to become a teenager. In a few releases we're going to get Angsty Aardvark, with a new default theme of various shades of black. Performance is going to go to pot, except for the music player, which will be awesome (if depressing). On the up side we will see improvements in word processing, with the addition of various poetry-related tools, and better art tools, although the colour palettes will, by default, be limited to white, red, and 64k shades of black.

Happy Birthday, Ubuntu!

This site is not one I've heard about, and there are at least two other observatory-type sites we have heard about, in casual conversation and in lectures.

This would, however, be the most engineered of them that we've heard about to date.

Astronomer Dr. Duane Hamacher has been studying Indigenous Australian astronomy for years, he believes the Wurdi Youang structure could date back more than 11,000 years.

"Some academics have referred to this stone arrangement here as Australia's version of Stonehenge," Dr Hamacher said.

"I think the question we might have to ask is: is Stonehenge Britain's version of Wurdi Youang? Because this could be much, much older."

The egg-shaped area is fifty metres wide and contains over 100 basalt boulders. After being noted by early European settlers and recorded by archaeologists in 1977, Wurdi Youang was only relatively recently given the attention it deserves as a site once sacred and signif…

Going Dutch: A Strategy To Save Cyclists, And Your Car

The phenomenon of bikers getting hit by an opening car door is so common it has its own term: dooring.

According to a study in Chicago, as many as 1 in 5 bicycle accidents involve car doors – in total, there is an average of nearly one dooring per day in the Windy City. Even when bikers swerve to avoid doors, they can end up getting hit by cars.

For decades now in the Netherlands drivers have been trained (and tested for their licenses) on a behavior that dramatically reduces the risk of doorings.

They do not even have a name for it because it is simply how one opens a car door. Basically, instead of using their door-side (left) arm, they reach over with their other (right) arm. This simple behavioral shift causes drivers to look back naturally and see whether or not there are on…

This weekend just past, Michael Goh was planning on running an astrophotography tutorial and photowalk up at The Pinnacles, as a part of Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk. Sadly, the weather did not cooperate, and he wisely cancelled the event. We are really looking forward to Take Two!

Despite this, Alicia Smith and I (and a couple of others) went up anyway, because, hey - roadtrip! and paid a visit to the Pinnacles in the late afternoon. Along the way there we stopped by the Gravity Discovery Centre just outside Gingin (Hi! Manager GDC ).

The following day we explored Cervantes, and stopped in at various picturesque spots along the way back.…
