We were just down at Scarborough Beach, and we see this helicopter doing slow passes back and forth.

It departs, and this largish boat comes up out of the night, searchlights blazing, and stops about 200m offshore.
We've only got our birdwatching binoculars with us, but we eventually see them hook up a dinghy without an outboard, and then they spend quite a bit more time scanning the sea in the area. They head out about 2km for a bit, come back, search a little more, and then head back up towards Hillary's or Whitfords.
Nothing on the sea rescue or police twitters, or in any of the news feeds as yet.
