Boat-borne refugees are not illegal immigrants, are not the major source of refugee arrivals, do not receive government payments or benefits on arrival or after being accepted as refugees, do not deserve to be used as political bargaining chips, and in any event this whole proposal is both inhumane and an abandonment of our international treaty obligations.

We like to say that Australia is not a racist country, but the fact that taking a hard line against boat people causes major upswings in polling for political parties is making that lie wear a bit thin.

ReplyDeleteWell actually there is a queue. You can go to an Australian Embassy or Consulate and register as a refugee. There is a quota on the number of people accepted in any year and the waiting list is somewhere in the 3-5 year range. Woefully inadequate but it does exist.
