if you don't know Dresden Codak ( http://dresdencodak.com/ ), go and have a read - one part surreal comedy, one part philosophical insight, and one part transhumanism make it a very interesting read. Meantime, also take a look at Aaron's ridiculously overfunded kickstarter below. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/156287353/the-tomorrow-girl-dresden-codak-volume-1?ref=activity

i don't know how much this is going to help in a country where the government has basically broken down, but we have to try every way we can to stop things like this. http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Somalia_No_Authority_to_Rape/?cMoTrbb

Stephen has it right - this is a great description of the problem. And not a bad analysis of the cause.

Impressive video from a variety of CCTV and dashcams. Originally shared by Nicole Gugliucci Breaking news from... everyone. Meteor appears to have broken up over Russia, scaring the beejesus out of just about everybody. Also, there are reports of injuries from windows shattered, probably from sonic boom.  Philip Plait notes on twitter that it is most likely NOT related to 2012 DA14, which is still several hours away and on a different orbit. The Earth gets showered with tons of space debris EVERY day, so this is likely a coincidence.  See videos at: http://rt.com/news/meteorite-crash-urals-chelyabinsk-283/ (And for the love of Pete, dear media, this is not a "meteor shower".) #meteor   #meteorite   #russia   http://rt.com/news/meteorite-crash-urals-chelyabinsk-283/

As most of my friends know, I have coeliac disease.

As most of my friends know, I have coeliac disease. CD is an auto-immune disorder triggered by gluten and a couple of related proteins. The only treatment is a totally gluten-free diet, and even then it can takes years to recover from it. To make things worse, once on a gluten-free diet your sensitivity goes up , and the short-term reactions get worse . To give you an idea of scale of sensitivity, the acceptable safe level is 20ppm - which works out at around 10mg in a day. This is the amount of gluten in about a 1mm crumb of white bread. Total. Over the whole day. Including airborne dust. And the long-term effects of exposure are not fun - bowel and intestinal cancer, osteoporosis, and more. As you can imagine, those of us who suffer from this get rather touchy about things like cross-contamination, eating in public, the list goes on. So when I read the stories in the link below I just about cried. Stories of such wonderful care and support are distressingly rare, and to hear ones lik...

The second alternative for this week's Weekly Photo Project 2013, how to get into one of my favourite restaurants.

The second alternative for this week's Weekly Photo Project 2013, how to get into one of my favourite restaurants. The Naked Fig is only a few hundred metres from Swanbourne Beach, Perth's only official nude beach. Getting from the carpark to the restaurant is not, however, obvious... There is another sign at the other carpark that provides similarly helpful instructions, as you can see the restaurant just fine, but there is no obvious way to get to it!

One of the several alternative photos I took for the Weekly Photo Project 2013 this week, this is about 50M from one of my favourite restaurants, and on the edge of the carpark for the area's best-known beach - Swanbourne. In the end, I went with my original plan of "Storm Sign", but I had to share this oh-so-typical sign of Western Australia.

"Storm Sign"

"Storm Sign" #WeeklyPhotoProject2013 curated by  Andrew Willard , Iain Harley and  Tiina Niskanen Weekly Photo Project 2013 Week 6: Signs i had been waiting all week for some clouds. We'd been getting "Thunderstorms late this week" for the past two weeks - today the forecast for tomorrow in Perth is 41C and thunderstorms. And I got my shot of mare's tails and threatening skies.

This guy is a hero of the quiet and determined sort. Stood his ground, politely expressed his disappointment with the driver, and made sure it all got reported as accurately as he could manage. One of the few quantifiable (if anecdotal) comparisons of FB vs G+ I have seen. And a very unexpected result! Originally shared by Wil Wheaton Thanks to everyone who visited my blog yesterday, in my stupid “what kind of traffic comes to my blog” thing. Here’s what I found out. Please note that this is profoundly unscientific and the margin of error is probably large. Total traffic in about 24 hours:  ~24,689 Traffic from Facebook:  ~13,428 Traffic from G+: ~11,261 I expected the numbers to be vastly different, skewed heavily toward Facebook. I haven’t made much of an effort to link to my blog from G+, because I figured people tended to stay on G+, or come from Reader, if they come from Google at all.  So, as far as I am concerned, G+ and Facebook are essentially the same for the purposes of “people come from there to read my blog.” Interactions on Facebook: Likes: 1118 Comments: 345 Shares: I have no idea. Facebook doesn’t make this easy to see. G+: +1s (same as likes): 647 Comments: 2...
